Finishing the half and seeing off the hair

We did it!

Nine of the Year Here alumni, fellows and faculty made it round the Hackney Half Marathon 2017 in another hot and very sweaty outing.

Here’s me on the final straight:

I’d like to say the expressions were down to having just run 13.1 miles, but in fact I looked like this the entire way round (search my name in the official photo album for proof of this).

Thanks to all who were there to support / cheer / play the steel drums on the day.

In one final fundraising push, the next week four of us headed down to Trafalgar Square (why not?) for a charity head-shave finalé:

Again a big thank you to the hair-chopping volunteers and cameramen, as well as to the small crowd that bemusedly gathered (including those watching live on Facebook from home / the M6 / the Himalayas).

I’ve just received confirmation that my hair made it to The Little Princess Trust, where hopefully it will become one of the 1,000 wigs that they give out to children suffering hair loss each year. I no longer have #hairtospare.

We raised almost three and a half thousand pounds to go towards the Year Here bursary scheme, which you can still add to by clicking here if you haven’t already.

Two weeks to go: heatwaves and veganism

It’s Easter Sunday, and instead of cracking into an Easter egg, I’ve been for my last long run before the Hackney Half in a fortnight’s time.

Two out of the last three years have seen such hot weather on the day of Hackney Half that some runners have passed out. Sincerely hoping for a cooler run this time.

So what are the other challenges?

Well, aside from hitting our fundraising total (here’s the link if you haven’t already donated – remember: I’ll be removing the above-pictured hair if we hit £5,000), there’s the fact that throughout my training so far, I’ve been entirely vegan – which I’ve been trying out for Lent.

I remember listening to a podcast with Scott Jurek, the vegan ultra-marathon runner, while training last year. Although I didn’t think to explore the concept more at the time, a quick Google search reveals a bunch of other top vegan athletes. The UK has its own vegan running club, and there are blogs dedicated to meat-free run training.

It’ll be interesting to see how my time from two year’s ago (when I was still on a full-meat diet) compares to this year…

We made it

Brighton Marathon 2016 / Time: 3:35:03 / Raised: £1,372.98 for Epilepsy Research UK (so far…)

My day on Sunday 17th April began like this:


After a breakfast of porridge, banana, toast, and trepidation, we headed to the start-line in Preston Park. Now I’m sure it’s usually lovely, but after heavy rain and heavier footfall on this particular weekend, the starting area of the park was essentially a quagmire. After trying and failing to do a few dynamic stretches in the mud, and steadfastly ignoring the MC who tried to rouse us in a karaoke session, we were off.

The sun was shining, the weather was sweet. Having nervously strapped up my achilles tendon and popped a few more ibuprofen than I’d care to admit before starting, the first few miles were spent testing the water. I hadn’t been able to do much running for a couple of weeks beforehand, and to take my mind off this I chatted to a fellow green-vested Epilepsy Research runner I met on the way. We were both running for the first time and chuckled apprehensively at what we’d got ourselves into…

As we left the crowds and headed East towards the Marina, I found both a rhythm and a fellow member of Tower Hamlets GoodGym running club. Chatting was still possible at this stage, but soon I was on my own again as we turned to run back towards town.


Having scoffed an energy gel and seen my cheering squad again, I was feeling pretty good at the halfway point. Brighton looks amazing in the sunshine, and I was catching up with a viking I’d set my sights on earlier in the day.

Without a doubt the hardest miles were 19 to 23. Running away from the crowds, uphill into an industrial estate made the cheering of the seafront seem a long time ago. Even the people handing out jelly babies, oranges and vaseline were (ironically) drying up. The lowest point was overtaking Spiderman who was on his knees, unable to continue.

I counted down the final few miles, spurred by the multitude of people out in support. Dizziness and slight delirium are all I really remember from the finish line.


Having had no expectations, I was really happy to make it round in three hours and 35 minutes. I’d also edged past my fundraising target the day beforehand, which has since continued to rise.

I’m yet to decide what I’ll do with the blog from here. I’ll aim to keep running, and may book into a shorter race or two later in this year to hold myself to account.

And who knows? I popped down to watch the London Marathon runners go through my area earlier this morning.

Run for Beer / Squeeky Bum Time


I’m back once again to remind you that today is officially TWO WEEKS until I have to run a MARATHON.


It’s really happening people.

Something great happened last month though. I was flipping through the pages of Original Gravity and stumbled across an article on the phenomenon that is Mikkeller Running Club.


For those of you not too familiar with the Scandinavian craft beer scene, Mikkeller are Danish brewery that have been growing rapidly in Europe and America in recent years. Their founder was a keen runner back in the day, so decided to start MRC as a sociable and healthy way to meet like-minded beer-heads.

Last month I went along to the London branch (there are an ever growing number of chapters worldwide), which meets at BrewDog Camden. The vibe is chilled and Carl and Luiz who run the branch make sure that they cater for a range of ages (though probably over-18), abilities and genders.

THE BEST THING IS that when you return from your 5 or 10k run (up to you), you are greeted with a refreshing (and free) glass of beer from the BrewDog taps. Check out their next event here if this is sounding like music to your ears.


As you should by now have realised, I’m running the Brighton Marathon for Epilepsy Research UK very very soon. Just one example of the great work this organisation is doing happened last month, when they ran an international expert workshop (preliminary to a governmental white paper), on issues around epilepsy and brain tumours. 80% of people with brain tumours develop epilepsy, and the experts are aiming to  shed new light on this under-researched area.

The work of this organisation would not be possible without donations from the public, and this is the reason I’ll be donning my running shorts for 26.2 miles in two weeks’ time. ‘Every little helps’ is a reality, not just a cliché, and I am truly grateful to any of you who can spare a small amount to support this cause. Tendons and Trampolines

Happy Easter!

I’ve so far resisted the piles of eggs that have accrued around me. With three weeks to go (three weeks!) until Marathon Day, this seems like a wise choice.

Lots to talk about today, despite not having managed my proposed long Easter run. I picked up an achilles tendon issue on Wednesday night, so am hoping that a few days rest will sort it out.

Since my last post, the main news is my survival of a sixteen-mile run around East London (on a FRIDAY NIGHT, no less – what have I become?). As I neared the last few miles, I whipped out my phone to snap the magnificent-looking Tower Bridge, at which point said phone promptly died, meaning Strava missed the final section:

I promise I did actually finish the run. PROMISE.

The following morning, I took part in the Bootstrap Fun Run 10k in Victoria Park, to raise money for their programmes to support young entrepreneurs in East London:


You can tell from how photogenic we look that this was the ‘before’ shot rather than the ‘after’.

I also visited Oxygen Freejumping trampoline park in Acton. With trampolines carpeting the floor and walls, and an assault course reminiscent of a miniature Takeshi’s Castle, this was a ridiculously fun way to test some underused muscles.


Despite the tendon troubles, I managed to get out for a five-mile run in the countryside with my older sister on Saturday. We managed to (partly accidentally) co-ordinate our outfits in honour of #PurpleDay2016, a day of global epilepsy awareness. It’s awesome to see across social media just how many people have taken up this cause, to which I’m trying to contribute in my own small way.

ONE MONTH TO GO: Yoga and a Tale of Two Tunnels

It’s now less than five weeks until Marathon Day, and you’ll be pleased to hear that I’ve decided to start taking things seriously.

In fact part of the reason for this overdue update is my much more regular running schedule. Having never been a morning person, I’m now managing to force myself out of bed earlier than ever before to clock some mileage before starting the day.

I’ve even complemented this regime by attending my first yoga class.

Walking into the changing rooms for the first time and immediately being confronted with another man’s penis, I very nearly turned around and walked back out.

But hey, it’s yoga man.

Yo-go with it.

I’d been hearing a lot about how practising yoga can be really helpful for runners, and after dipping an outstretched toe into it last week, I’ll be trying to make time for this on a regular basis now as well. At least everyone is clothed for the actual classes.

I also undertook an accidental twelve-mile run along the Thames last weekend.

Having crossed from the Isle of Dogs via the Greenwich Foot Tunnel (opened in 1902), I thought I could cross back through another tunnel upriver.

As it turns out, the Thames Tunnel (completed in 1843) has been used exclusively by trains since 1869… Not quite sure what I was thinking there. I rerouted to cross Tower Bridge, which added a few extra miles, but was probably safer than the train tracks.

Most of you by now will know that I’m running the marathon for Epilepsy Research UK. Epilepsy was in the news last week when Harrison Ford spoke publicly about his daughter Georgia’s experience of the condition. Apparently she was misdiagnosed for years before somebody worked it out:

“I said to myself this is Los Angeles, we have some of the best doctors in the world, they must know what’s wrong with her. But nothing was diagnosed as epilepsy.”

Georgia has since responded really well to treatment, but there are thousands of others who don’t have access to this, or who haven’t even been properly diagnosed. I’m running to raise money for all these people, and anything you can give to help will be so, so appreciated.

Six weeks to go: No more excuses…

Things are getting serious now.

Looks like I’m actually gonna have to run this thing.

It’s going to require way more discipline over the next six weeks than I’ve had of late… but at least the sun came out this week!

I’ve just returned from this week’s Park Run at Mile End Park (literally, I haven’t even showered yet), and was a lot happier with my performance on this occasion. Turning up on time was a good start. So far these 5ks have been a really nice way to balance the longer stamina runs.

There were LOADS of people there. Thanks this week to the orange-shirted-and-shorted beardy man, who I just missed out on catching in the final straight. That sprint knocked a good few seconds off my time. And next week, I’m coming for you…


Donations to my fundraising page for Epilepsy Research UK have still been coming in, so a huge thank you to all my recent sponsors. ‘Purple Day’, an epilepsy awareness day started in 2008 by a young Canadian girl with the condition is coming up this year on 24th March. It’s now a global event which does a lot to boost fundraising and public awareness. I’ll probably be pestering you lovely people for support even more on that date so be prepared!
